Sleep apnoea is a syndrome characterised by recurrent episodes of partial or complete upper airway obstruction during sleep that are usually terminated by awakening.

Obstruction of the upper airway during sleep may result in snoring, and reduction (hypopnoea) or cessation (apnoea) of airflow.

Obstructive sleep apnoea has been associated with health risks such as cardiac arrhythmias, systemic and pulmonary hypertension, ischaemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease.

Obstructive sleep apnoea occur because upper airway muscle activity decreases during sleep, leading to collapse of the pharyngeal tissues, and posterior displacement of the tongue.

 Oral appliances from SomnoDent?

Oral sleep apnoea appliance consists of two dental plates, which look similar to a mouth guard. The appliance is custom made to fit your mouth and should be worn during sleep.

Oral appliances work by modifying the upper airway size; they advance the mandible or tongue and thus increase the upper airway size.
